Creative people are in high demand! Students can exercise their creativity by participating in the 2016 Dublin Invention Convention. This year Dublin City Schools students in grades K-8 have the opportunity to participate on April 9th at Karrer Middle School. All participants will be recognized, the winning students will advance to the regional level at Tolles Career & Technical Center. This is a great opportunity for students to develop and enhance critical thinking skills through invention, innovation and entrepreneurship. Another year is quickly coming to an end!

Math - We'll fine-tune our division skills this week.
Science - Electricity quiz on Friday. Students need to be able to identify conductors and insulators, and closed and open circuits,

Missing Assignments - Check Progress Book. I cannot accept any assignments after Thursday in order to complete grades.

Art Portfolios - They will be coming home on Wednesday. Students that typically ride bikes home after school may need to make other arrangements.

Chapman/Hoover Team Party - Pizza, snacks and drinks will be provided for students. Thanks to parents putting this together for us!  $3 per student is requested by Thursday in order to cover the cost of pizza. On Friday, we'll have lunch and play games outside near the shelter close to the path and ball diamond, past the playground. Lunch 12:15-1:00 and games following.

Library Books and Textbooks - These need returned as soon as possible. Students can keep reading classroom library books of course! Anything found over the summer can be returned to the office. Mrs. Greenwalt and Mrs. Schnese will make sure Mrs. Hoover and I get the books. Thanks!

Math Projects, EdCamp and More!

5/13/2015

What a great week, and it's only Wednesday!

Creativity, technological skills, geography, and of course math are present in the Road Trip Time! projects students have been working on, and sharing with classmates. I'll apologize now if your child/ren are begging you to go on one of these trips this summer. At least they'll be able to help plan the trip!

Students are also doing a lot of review of mathematical skills we've learned this year. Everything from area and perimeter to adding and multiplying fractions (and more!).

Thanks to Mrs. Hoover for teaching the students about EdCamp. The 20 or so presenters have taught classmates and us about so many different things to make, learn about, and practice saying or writing. It's been wonderful to see students teach each other something new. Check out the tweets accessible through Mrs. Hoover's site.

Today's field trip to the Ohio History Center was great...so many things to see and do related to our learning this year. A big THANK YOU to our chaperones for helping guide our students in the museum and village. Students and teachers alike also liked shopping in the Gift Shop.

Multicultural Day is Friday. Students will be learning about France, India, Japan through presentations and activities. Students will receive a 'passport' which will be 'stamped' throughout the day. Students are encouraged to wear traditional clothing, colors and garments that represent their culture. We will be eating lunch in the classroom, so students may either bring a packed lunch, or purchase the fun lunch bag option.

Related Arts:
Monday - Music,  Tuesday - Art,   Wednesday - No PE due to field trip,  Thursday - Library,   Friday - No Related Arts due to building-wide Multicultural Day

Week of MAY 4th and then some...

Our math road trip projects are under construction. :)   With this project, students are using a variety of skills:
  • measuring the distance between locations (geography and multiplication using a map scale)
  • calculating expenses (multiplication and division)
  • researching vehicles and airlines
  • helping each other with calculations and research
  • using google slides or keynote to organize and share trip
  • presenting to the class

As soon as a student is ready to share their findings, they'll have class time to do so. All presentations must be shared by Friday, May 22.

We'll finish up Social Studies with the ODE test on Tuesday, and a field trip on 5/13. We've come along way this year from the Ice Age to the abolishment of slavery. Students have learned about Ohio's significant role in American history. I can honestly say the students help me learn and enjoy Social Studies this year. Their interest was contagious!

Starting on Wednesday, we'll get back to Science and ecosystems, food webs and fossils. Later this month, we'll spend time with electricity and heat transfer. Then, we'll finish the year learning about body systems such as the nervous and circulatory systems.

Math
We've been looking at tables of information and determining the rule for the pattern, as well as missing data from the table. There will be a quiz on Tuesday 4/28 related to this (Lessons 2-2 to 2-4).

We've also been brushing up on our division skills with Lesson 9-4. Students are moving from writing the remainder as "R 3" for example, to a fraction or decimal depending on individual strength of division. For those students capable of writing the decimal form of a remainder, they will fine-tune skills in other areas. There will be a quiz on Friday 5/1.

Social Studies
Week #23 newspaper - Money - students were to select 3 choices to complete by Monday 4/27.

We'll be looking at the causes of the Civil War and the abolition of slavery beginning next week. I will be sharing "What Was the Underground Railroad", and students will use the following resources to help guide their understanding:
Week #17 newspaper - Battles with Britain and Tecumseh
Week #26 newspaper - Escaping Slavery
Social Studies textbook "History Alive" Chapter 18

Landform Projects
Thank you to families and students for a job well done! Students learned so many things about landforms, aerial photographs and topographic maps, erosion and deposition from their individual projects, and classmates' projects as well. It's been great for everyone else at Wyandot to see them on display in the commons. With the upcoming Art Show, the landforms need to go home (or donate to me for next year!) by Friday, May 1st. For students that created Google slides, let me know if it's ok for me to keep a copy of your slides.

Related Arts
Monday - PE (Mr. Soliz's last day is Thursday),
Tuesday - Library
Wednesday - Music
Thursday - Art
Friday - PE

In science, we'll continue to learn more about ecosystems. There will be a quiz on Friday.

In social studies, we will learn about the Civil War and there will be homework this week related to this war.
